African Leadership Academy and Gap Year Program
About this event: African Leadership Academy Headmaster meeting
Related to country: United States
About the book: "How to Win Friends & Influence People"

I’m writing to tell you about an opportunity of a lifetime! African Leadership Academy is currently selecting the next group of Africa’s best 100 young leaders to join us in September 2011. It’s a fantastic opportunity for a bright, motivated young person with leadership potential to join this institution that aims to change the face of Africa. The Deadline is December 12th.

We provide a solid academic education, Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) A-level curriculum, that enables our students to enter great universities after ALA in addition to the incredible hands-on experiences we provide for our students in Leadership, Entrepreneurship and African Studies. To date, young leaders have been admitted into universities like Ashesi University in Ghana, University of Cape Town in South Africa, Oxford, MIT, Stanford, Yale, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, AND MANY OTHERS. They continue preparing applications to universities in Canada, Asia, Australia, Europe and, of course, ACROSS AFRICA!

We continue developing these future leaders through various stages of their lives connecting them to powerful networks of people and capital. To this end, we and would love to interview you for a Leadership project. We have identified you as a leader, and firmly believe that young leaders need role models such as yourself. As a role model for future leaders, we would like to have a biography for you so that our young students can learn from your experiences in order to model their lives after yours.

Do you know of any talented young leaders in Africa between the ages of 16 and 19 that you think would be great candidates for ALA? If so, please encourage them to apply! Please also share this word with parents you know. Any contacts you have who can give ALA publicity in the media, who are in Ministries of Education, NGOs that work with young people, etc would also be extremely helpful to us.

If you would like to refer us to any such contacts, email me at eoummih@africanleadershipacademy.org. Financial assistance is available. The first round application deadline is December 12th 2010. For more information, please visit our website, www.africanleadershipacademy.org.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and thank you for your help!

Kind regards,

African Leadership Academy
Translations available in: English (original) | Arabic

The African Leadership Academy is currently accepting Scholarship Applications from Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Sudan and Mauritania. Applications in French, Arabic or English can be downloaded from our website at www.africanleadershipacademy.org

It is also currently sponsering a $40,000 Innovation award for youth between the ages of 14 and 18 in Zimbabwe and Angola. For more information you can go to www.africanleadershipacademy.org

Finally, the ALA is accepting Gap Year and Year abroad applications from students all over the world. Simply go to www.alagapyear.org to apply.

I think the African Leadership Academy is about as close as you can get to the perfect school. The reason I say this is because the ALA does three things that every great school should do:

1. Opens doors for its students after graduation. When you ask any parent, their main goal in sending kids to school is to improve their kids chances of success in the future. Obviously, they want their children to learn, they want their children to be able to develop the ability to learn, but their main goal is to improve the odds that their children are going to get into the best Universities after completing their high school studies/get the best jobs possible. The ALA does this by allowing students to choose for the most part, which classes they want to take. It also has a top notch College prep crew that makes sure that all students have ample time to study standardized testing while providing an environment where students are able to provide constant feeback to their teachers. The fact that all of the students are hand chosen, and only make it into the ALA if they have already shown leadership skills does not hurt!

2. Diversity and more diversity. The ALA has a little under 200 students and a faculty to student ratio of 6 to 1. This is almost unheard of when it comes to high schools; especially high schools in Africa. The ALA has had students apply from over 50 countries! The student body currently represents students from 36 different countries! This allows students to gain insight into other countries and cultures at a very young age, which again improves their ability to succead in an increasingly global community. Our teachers and staff also represent a number of countries, boasting Stanford, Harvard and Yale graduates among its active staff!!

3. Responsibility. The ALA teaches students to be responsible for all aspects of their lives. They learn invaluable financial skills that will continue to serve them well into their adult life. From being held accountable/responsible for their own laundry money, to requiring that each student complete an entrepeneurial project prior to graduation. At the ALA, Leadership is not just a word, it is a frame of thought. At the ALA a Leader is defined as someone who acts in the interests of those he/she leads. All students participate in community activities and spend a significant amount of time developing large scale solutions to real problems faced by real communities. The ALA prepares students for the real world by having them deal with real world problems before completing their A level degrees. All students make presentations to hundreds of people a number of tims while in school; all students learn how to find the root cause of problems and thus create root cause solutions.
The ALA is currently accepting applications for the African Leadership Academy Scholarship from Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, Libya, Sudan and Egypt. It is free to apply and can be done completely online. Simply go to the website at www.africanleadershipacademy.org and fill out an application, it is that simple. Admission is based on Merit. The ALA does not want to let money stand in the way of developing the future leaders of Africa. The Application Deadline is March 31st, however, it is strongly recommended that students apply before the end of February so as to guarantee an application multiple readers.
The ALA also runs a gap year program. Enrollment in the Gap Year and year abroad program is open to all 16 to 19 year old students all over the world. Applications can be downloaded from www.alagapyear.org.

Finally, the ALA is currently running an Innovation Award contest in Angola and Zimbabwe.

The ALA will give a $40,000 scholarship to one youth from each of these countries that best demonstrates the ability to be innovative. Innovation can be in any field, finalists have shown innovation in fields as diverse as Information technology and Chemistry, to Political activism, Community activities and excellence in sport. The Deadline for the award in Zimbabwe and Angola is March 1st. More information on this award can be found by visiting www.africanleadershipacademy.org.

ALA students get accepted to Top Notch Schools
Translated into English by: elmahdi oummih
Dear Friends,

We are breaking from our usual quarterly e-mail cycle to send this special news blast! Over the past month we have marveled as our students have received "early" acceptances to some of the world's leading universities, have launched groundbreaking initiatives on campus, and have been humbled by the support of individuals like you, who are helping us capture the matching funds we have on offer.

We hope you will consider a year-end donation to ALA, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to ALA this holiday season. We know that there are many organizations competing for your energy and resources, but we believe that African Leadership Academy offers the most exciting investment we can make in Africa's future. Thank you for joining us in our quest to change lives and transform a continent.

We hope you enjoy this special update, and from everyone at African Leadership Academy, we wish you a happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Fred Swaniker, Chris Bradford, Peter Mombaur, and Acha Leke
ALA Founders

EARLY UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS!

In October, a group of ALA students applied in the "early round" for admission to leading universities around the world, and the results have flowed in over the past week. Our early admissions successes have been staggering - ALA students have been admitted to Yale, Stanford, Dartmouth, Penn, Cornell, Columbia, Duke, Georgetown, Tufts, and others! Six of our students were invited to interview at Oxford and Cambridge over the past two weeks, and we received news of our first admission to Oxford yesterday! Yet another ALA student has been named a finalist for the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina.

Best of all, the universities are coming to the party with amazing scholarships that meet the full financial need for our admitted students! From Columbia to the College of Wooster, leading universities are recognizing the incredible potential of our students and making it possible for them to attend university - often free of charge - next year. Our early admission results bode well for the vast majority of our students, who will learn of their college admissions in March and April!

EXCITING STUDENT INITIATIVES CONTINUE!

Last week witnessed the launch of the "Global Strategy on Inclusive Education" by ALA student Edward Ndopu of South Africa. Edward, who lives with a disability and must use a wheelchair for mobility, wants to see more educational opportunities made available to children living with disabilities in developing countries - who today rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to attend mainstream schools. You can watch the powerful speech that Edward gave at the launch - and read more about his promising initiative by visiting www.gsieactivist.org.
ON TRACK FOR "THE MATCH"

Four weeks ago, a small group of supporters laid down a challenge and offered a $1.5 million matching fund for all donations received before 31 December. We are on track to meet this target, but we still need your help! If you have already contributed, we thank you so much for your contribution toward making this possible! The match represents a game-changing opportunity for ALA, and we hope we will fully close the match in the last days of the year. Every dollar counts, and we thank you for contributing and sharing our news with friends or contacts who might be interested in ALA.

Are you looking for a holiday gift for the hard-to-shop-for person on your list?
Why not make a donation to ALA in honor of someone you love? Every donation above US$170 will be honored with a brick in your name on our Founders' Wall, which will be unveiled in 2010. If you wish to personalize the inscription on your brick, then please make your donation through this link.

And if you act today, your gift will be matched 1:1 by the generous matching fund we have on offer - generating twice the impact on ALA and our students!
